How to PROVE you know what you're doing

One question I get a lot from clients and other YouTubers is "how do I get proof?"

Proof that I know what I’m talking about. Proof for my landing page. Proof for my sales calls.

Proof that I can help someone. Especially when you haven’t helped someone before.

And the answer is…

You build the Pyramids of Giza.

Not literally, no one has time for that.

But you steal the philosophy.

If you’re building a huge pyramid, you start with the first brick…like my lovely Pharaoh has done here.

Then you put down the next one.

And the next one.

And before you know it, you have a functioning, little pyramid:

The only issue with this analogy is I'm 99% sure this isn't how you build a real pyramid.

So it's a good thing I'm not an Egyptian Pharaoh.

But alas, this is exactly how I’ve approached building my own proof over time.

When I started YouTube, all I had was a job and 24 years of life lessons to share.

So I talked about that, and 50 videos later I had 1k subscribers.

That helped me get a job running a 3m subscriber channel.

Which helped get me my first online client for $600.

Which helped me get my next client.

Which gave me the confidence to launch a course, then quit my job and launch my programme.

I’ve built my proof one brick at a time.

And it’s one of the most critical parts of an online education business.

Because without it, there’s no reason for a viewer or potential customer to trust you. If they can’t see proof you’re worth listening to, they won’t listen to you.

It’s integral to every conversation you have.

Why should I listen to you?

Or in short, WSILTY.

We have to answer the WSILTY question at all times. It’s also never 100% done. Everyone is always evaluating “should I still listen to this person?” …I won’t hit you with an acronym for that one.

So, what’s the best way to think about this if you have little to no proof.

Well to start with, YOU are the proof.

Your own results, your own experience, your own backstory is the proof.

When I first started making YouTube videos, my proof = I had a consulting job. Not everyone did, and my videos were interesting to people who wanted one.

Before that, my proof could have been how I got good grades at school and uni (this did in fact allow me to get tutoring clients).

But ultimately, the first piece of proof has to come from you. And you have to be able to demonstrate your proof, either by showing it visually like with a musical instrument or by talking about it well enough that you clearly know you’re stuff.

That’s it.

That’s enough to make your first sale, or get your first client. I’ve seen it happen time and time again.

Once you get the sale, you do whatever you can to blow their socks clean off.

So your customers say things like:

Then you have your first bit of proof.

And your job? Milk it.

Milk that proof for every drop of it’s worth.

Use it as evidence to your viewers and your next customers that someone worked with you and enjoyed it. Better yet, they got results!

A common question is “can I use YouTube comments?” and the answer is yes, but do so sparingly. Because anyone can leave them they are less valuable, and people know how crazy the YouTube commenters can be.

But once you’ve got that first win, that first testimonial, that first screenshot you can share, then you’re off to the races.

The job is to get one more. Then another, and another after that.

And stack it all on top of each other.

Bit by bit you build overwhelming proof that demonstrates you know exactly what you’re talking about.

And in your emails, you can share tonnes of proof from the last week alone ohhh nooo excuse me it’s happening…

After a while, it just stacks up, and you have more proof than you need.

So to answer the question “how do I get more proof?” is you build it brick by brick.

And you never ever stop making your pyramid larger.

Until it's HUGE! The biggest in the world!

You show up day after day and build your empire, by making great content and delivering great results for yourself and for other people.

And of course, WSILTY.

Always, always, WSILTY.

A few years ago, this was the image I had in my head of what I needed to do to build a 6-figure online business. I was thinking riiiight, ok, I need to cross post on all the platforms, build my website (because “brand” ??), have multiple courses, digital products and rake it in from sponsors too. And find the time to run a podcast too because that’d be really fun. Which obviously was going to go viral and make millions. So I need to be 1000% productive every day, and absolutely dialled in. No...

If you had told me when I was 1 year into YouTube, that I should completely ignore Adsense, sponsors and affiliates, I would have (metaphorically) crapped my pants. I'd thought about selling a product, but it felt like I had to have a big enough audience to be able to make great money from Adsense too. It didn't feel like there was another option. Now today, more YouTubers have woken up to the fact that it’s very hard to build a big enough audience to monetise like that. But still, YouTubers...

When I first started YouTube in 2021, I thought I was going to get rich from Adsense, sponsors and affiliates. The plan was to get 100,000s of views, partner with brands like Skillshare and make bank through Amazon's affiliate scheme by talking about books. And within a few years, I’d be walking down to the yacht shop in Monaco and eyeing up a $2m boat. First of all, yes I am that jacked in real life. Don't laugh. Secondly, I didn't actually start YouTube just for the money. I was motivated...
