A few years ago, this was the image I had in my head of what I needed to do to build a 6-figure online business. I was thinking riiiight, ok, I need to cross post on all the platforms, build my website (because “brand” ??), have multiple courses, digital products and rake it in from sponsors too. And find the time to run a podcast too because that’d be really fun. Which obviously was going to go viral and make millions. So I need to be 1000% productive every day, and absolutely dialled in. No time for non-work stuff. Over the years though, I’ve seen a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs and YouTubers have the same image in their heads. But after working with Ali Abdaal for 2.5 years, I saw that most of his revenue came from just 1 product. The Part Time YouTuber Academy, a multi-million dollar product. And the way they sold it was just YouTube + email. That’s it. Why is email so powerful? 3 quick reasons:
So over time Ali’s audience grew on other platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, Tiktok and then paid ads started to make sense too. But he made $4m with just YouTube and email before doing any of that stuff. And I’m over here as a beginner, not making any money, trying to make long form and short form content, and cross post on every platform? What…??? So I updated my model of what was required to succeed. 1 channel, 1 email list, 1 offer. And today that’s helped me build my business to $300k+/year, and it’s what I teach all my clients. I call it The $100k YouTuber Business Model. Patent pending. It's so much simpler. You just get really really really good at 1) selling and 2) delivering the same offer. Once you get some momentum, the learning compounds in each area. I know you’re looking at that $300 bit and wondering what that means. But I’ll get into that tomorrow. For now, I’m going to be the ultimate entrepreneur bro and quote Steve Jobs: “Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.” Wow, chills. Hormozi has a more succinct version “focus is subtraction”. And just to really drive this home, here’s one of my favourite diagrams off all time. If you truly want to succeed on YouTube, you have to be laser focused. And do the smallest number of things that are going to get you the highest returns. For now, if you want to hear me talk about this business model and how I use it myself, check out this video here. Otherwise, see you tomorrow for some high ticket vs low ticket shenanigans. Tintin 🫡 P.s. If you're enjoying these emails, feel to reply with any thoughts or questions! I'll do my best to reply. If you had told me when I was 1 year into YouTube, that I should completely ignore Adsense, sponsors and affiliates, I would have (metaphorically) crapped my pants. I'd thought about selling a product, but it felt like I had to have a big enough audience to be able to make great money from Adsense too. It didn't feel like there was another option. Now today, more YouTubers have woken up to the fact that it’s very hard to build a big enough audience to monetise like that. But still, YouTubers...
When I first started YouTube in 2021, I thought I was going to get rich from Adsense, sponsors and affiliates. The plan was to get 100,000s of views, partner with brands like Skillshare and make bank through Amazon's affiliate scheme by talking about books. And within a few years, I’d be walking down to the yacht shop in Monaco and eyeing up a $2m boat. First of all, yes I am that jacked in real life. Don't laugh. Secondly, I didn't actually start YouTube just for the money. I was motivated...
Hey YouTuber, This week, I’m going to be running a 7 day email series. Because it’s my 5 year anniversary for starting on YouTube. And since my first video back in October 2021, YouTube has completely changed my life. I’ve gone from being a 25 year old dweeb in consulting, who knew nothing about how to make videos... ...to running Ali Abdaal's YouTube channel for 2 years... ...to a still dweeby 30 year old running his own YouTube business, and flying around the world to podcast with people my...
