How Simen transformed his YouTube business

Meet my friend Simen.

He's an expert electric guitarist, teaching what he knows on YouTube.

And today I want to share how he went from earning $500/month from his channel for over a year, to consistently earning over $5k/month and hitting his first $10k/month all within 9 months.

But much more importantly than the money, he transformed his life in the process.

He has a dream of making music, and he can now sustain that dream with his YouTube business.

I want to share more and more real examples of successful YouTubers, in the hope that it brings to life some of the core principles of building a great YouTube business.

So 1 year ago Simen had:

  • 8,000 subscribers on his channel
  • 1,800 readers on his email list
  • A $9/month membership to a library of courses

And he was stuck.

His product was actually really good. He'd built a proper library of courses that his audience loved, but it was only $9...

Which means he would have needed 1,111 paying customers to reach $10k a month.

And he had 60...

So the math wasn't mathing.

Now, any business coach with a brain would have told Simen to just launch a 1:1 coaching programme.

Charge $2,000. Get 5 clients. $10k month. Bish bash bosh.

And we talked about it.

But Simen knew in his heart of hearts that wasn't the business he wanted to build. And I respect that. But you HAVE to know the trade-off.

Low ticket means you need way more views and a much bigger email list to make the numbers work.

But Simen was ok with that.

So first things first, we fixed the offer.

$9/month → $297/year. My general recommendation is in a low ticket business never offer something less than $300 because you need so much traffic to make things work.

To be clear though, it was the exact same product, the same audience and just a higher price. He was terrified no one would pay.

But they did.

And now the offer was fixed, views became the new bottleneck.

So Simen experimented a bunch on YouTube, and it wasn't easy. Things didn't come quickly.

But we came up with one idea "how to play like a famous guitarist in X minutes"

And things clicked.

Jimi Hendrix: 90,000 views. Justin Bieber: 36,000 views. John Mayer: 130,000 views.

At the same time, he was learning to write better emails.

Emails that told stories about how he actually learned the guitar.

He started getting more replies, more engagement. His list was slowly but surely getting warmer.

And then one video just went wild.

A guide to learning guitar in the right order. His whole philosophy in a single video, with a free guitar roadmap as the lead magnet and a clean call to action to his offer at the end.

His email list went from 4,000 to over 10,000 in a few weeks, and he made over $5,000 in sales that month.

But that's the beauty of preparation.

He was ready for it. The offer was ready. The lead magnet was ready. The email list was ready. And when those views came along, he knew exactly what to do with them.

And things have slowly built up since then, leading to his first $10k/month in January this year.

But Simen didn't really care about that. He mainly care about being able to earn a full time income from his guitar business.

Which he only needed about $3k/month for.

Amazingly, Simen has done this without sales calls, sponsors and with total control over his time.

And I'm so so happy for him.

He had a vision, and he executed on it. Nobody can deny a man respect who puts his money where his mouth is.

I actually made a full video about Simen which came out on the channel last week if you want to check it out:

Otherwise, speak soon.

And for heaven's sake don't sell something for $9.

Today, I have an exciting announcement. I am launching a completely free community for educational YouTubers. And I'm going to be doing a free workshop or Q&A every week! How exciting, I know. Why? Well, I love writing to you like this. I also love talking to you through a camera in my bedroom. But this movement is only just beginning. Around the world more and more educators, teachers and anyone with wisdom to share are building incredible businesses. And it's only going to keep going. I...

I realised something recently. Every YouTuber I work with who's actually doing one key thing is making progress. And YouTubers who aren't doing it don't make progress. I've been telling people to do this simple thing for ages, but still people don't do it. And I'll repeat it as long as I'm in this business. Because it's the simple things that work. The secret sauce? It's putting a link to book in a free call with you at the top of your video description and emails. And then telling people to...

Last week I went away to Spain to play some golf with the lads. This is us on the 18th green measuring up a putt to win our version of the Ryder Cup tournament (a real professional tournament when US golfers play European golfers). I'm in the blue at the back of the picture. And this is me on a stunning hole at Emporda Golf Course about to slice one right... I'm not very good. But it was an epic week, and we do it every year. I'm very grateful to have a group of friends who organise such...
