Last week I went away to Spain to play some golf with the lads. This is us on the 18th green measuring up a putt to win our version of the Ryder Cup tournament (a real professional tournament when US golfers play European golfers). I'm in the blue at the back of the picture. And this is me on a stunning hole at Emporda Golf Course about to slice one right... I'm not very good. But it was an epic week, and we do it every year. I'm very grateful to have a group of friends who organise such amazing trips. But taking time off can be tricky, especially when you have clients. And I don't know about you, but I looove a holiday. I don't have an addiction to work. I love what I do, and I love to hustle, but I also love a break and to rest. Typically my business and work fits around my life, not the other way around. This is my first principle that I find to be very effective. I generally schedule life stuff in and make things work around it. Last summer, I went to Mexico for 6 weeks with my girlfriend. I worked for 4 weeks and took 2 weeks off. And when I made the decision earlier in the year my thinking was "I will just make it work". Because I don't just want to optimise for the business all the time. Yes, this approach means the business grows slower. But I'm ok with that if it means I also get to do fun stuff, and slice a few golf balls into the water. Sometimes it's hard and I wonder if I should just lock in, not talk to anyone for 6 months and "make more progress than 99% of people" like a clickbaity YouTube title. But the reality is I like doing other things too much. And I'm prepared for the slower growth as a result. But when you have clients and you have some kind expectation around outcomes in a specific time frame, taking holiday can feel a bit tricky. But here are some ways I handle it:
So if you're considering taking a break, here's a friendly reminder that it'll be ok. Your YouTube channel and business won't suddenly die, and if you've done a good job of delivery your clients will be happy for you. Let me know if you've got any good tips for taking time off. I don't feel I've quite cracked it yet. Tintin 🫡 P.s. Keep an eye out in these emails in the next week or two, I've got something exciting for educational YouTubers... P.p.s Yes, I did thin this chip straight past the flag and into the water. It was completely devastating and I lost my lead on the final day of our tournament. A few years ago, I read an amazing book. It's called The Go-Giver, by John Mann and Bob Burg. It's a very easy to read short story (roughly 100 pages) about a guy called Joe. Joe was a "go-getter", the type of person to go out and make life happen. And ultimately, to get more of what he wanted. As you can probably guess by the name, the book is about how giving more is actually the secret to Joe finding true success. A common theme in the business/self-help book world. It's clichéd, but true....
This morning at 8am, I walked around Highbury Fields in London. A pic from last Winter I often do this before starting a day's work. I grab a coffee and ponder life's big questions, while getting some steps in. As the sun rises on a beautiful day, I think about YouTube, thumbnails, and how no one can be truly happy without 1m subscribers on their YouTube channel. But one question I grappled with this morning was what are my guiding principles? What makes a happy business and life for me?...
I have a semi hot take on AI for you. And it's significantly reduced my AI anxiety (ainxiety?). It started a month or so back when Claude dropped their new tool Claude Design. Every man and his dog started making videos about how you could edit your entire YouTube video with it in less than 4 seconds. And suddenly my peanut-sized monkey brain throws up all sorts of stupid thoughts: "Should I be doing? Should all my clients be using this? Should I learn everything there is to know about Claude...
