Day 1 - how YouTube changed my life

Hey YouTuber,

This week, I’m going to be running a 7 day email series.

Because it’s my 5 year anniversary for starting on YouTube.

And since my first video back in October 2021, YouTube has completely changed my life.

I’ve gone from being a 25 year old dweeb in consulting, who knew nothing about how to make videos...

...to running Ali Abdaal's YouTube channel for 2 years...

...to a still dweeby 30 year old running his own YouTube business, and flying around the world to podcast with people my 25 year old self used to look up to like Nathan Barry.

When I first started my channel, I had no idea where it would take me. But I was taking a leap to pursue something that was exciting to me.

And today, I’ve become obsessed with helping educational YouTubers change the world by teaching what they know, and in the process scale their business to $100,000s/year.

Maybe you're just getting your channel going, or already making great money from it, but over the next few days, I’ll be sharing almost everything I know about how to do that.

Because building an education business through YouTube is one most meaningful things I’ve ever done. And everyone I’ve helped to achieve it says the same.

Like Egor here, who helps his audience of Data Scientists progress in their career:

Or Diane, who helps people plan for retirement:

Both of these guys went from no product, to consistent $50k/months within 1 year. Crazy.

Of course this isn't for everyone, and it’s certainly not easy, but if you’ve achieved some kind of valuable transformation for yourself, then you might have what it takes to build a successful YouTube business.

Why do I talk about $100,000/year?

Because for me, it’s the best balance of aspirational, achievable and life changing.

$10k/year isn’t enough to go full time, and $1m is a) more than you need to live a great life, and b) can feel too far away.

(But do NOT let me stop you from dreaming big like Diane and Egor!)

My goal with these emails is to make you believe it's possible.

Specifically, possible for you.

By sharing examples, the playbook for doing it, and giving you a sprinkle of emotional support (trust me, you’ll need some of that), hopefully you'll feel it's possible for you.

And why YouTube? Why are we all so obsessed with it?

Well YouTube is the best, free, educational platform in the world.

Billions of people are looking to learn from educational material on YouTube every month.

And when you make good YouTube content for the right person, the amount of good will it and trust it builds is unlike any other platform.

Second, YouTube pays you to find your customers.

No other platform shares their revenue like YouTube. For every 1,000 views you get on your channel, you’ll likely get around $3-5. It’s not tonnes, but a) it beats the alternative - spending money buying Meta ad placements and 2) it can add up over time.

So, that’s why YouTube.

In short, it’s the nuts.

And how long does it take to build one of these businesses?

Depending on where you’re starting from, this could take anywhere from 3 months to 3 years.

Aman Manazir went from a small computer science audience of 30k subscribers on YouTube to $100k+/year run rate in around 6 months, helping people land software engineering jobs.

The magician Oscar Owen spent a few years building his audience on YouTube, but has earned $100k+ from his channel for 8 years in a row.

The pianist Adam Saunders went from no channel to $190,000 launch in 13 months, with no prior experience on YouTube or business, in a highly competitive, hobbyist niche.

And I went from no audience of YouTubers to making $100k+ from my own business in about 18 months (I had a job for most of that).

So, if you know what you’re doing, this can be done relatively quickly.

Especially if your channel is already getting 1,000s of views per video.

But it’s not a get rich quick scheme.

Hopefully though, it’ll be one of the most fun, meaningful things you ever do in your life.

And you'll look back on it with pride when you're sitting on your porch in your 90s, with your AI robot delivering you a cup of tea.

I'll see you tomorrow to talk about how successful YouTubers build real businesses that last.

A few years ago, this was the image I had in my head of what I needed to do to build a 6-figure online business. I was thinking riiiight, ok, I need to cross post on all the platforms, build my website (because “brand” ??), have multiple courses, digital products and rake it in from sponsors too. And find the time to run a podcast too because that’d be really fun. Which obviously was going to go viral and make millions. So I need to be 1000% productive every day, and absolutely dialled in. No...

If you had told me when I was 1 year into YouTube, that I should completely ignore Adsense, sponsors and affiliates, I would have (metaphorically) crapped my pants. I'd thought about selling a product, but it felt like I had to have a big enough audience to be able to make great money from Adsense too. It didn't feel like there was another option. Now today, more YouTubers have woken up to the fact that it’s very hard to build a big enough audience to monetise like that. But still, YouTubers...

When I first started YouTube in 2021, I thought I was going to get rich from Adsense, sponsors and affiliates. The plan was to get 100,000s of views, partner with brands like Skillshare and make bank through Amazon's affiliate scheme by talking about books. And within a few years, I’d be walking down to the yacht shop in Monaco and eyeing up a $2m boat. First of all, yes I am that jacked in real life. Don't laugh. Secondly, I didn't actually start YouTube just for the money. I was motivated...
