1 YouTube video can change everything

Wahey, we went viral over the weekend.

18k views in 4 days. A big outlier for my channel.

Now in another email, I want to go deeper into the personal finances here.

Because the $288k looks cool, but it's far from what actually ends up in your pocket at the end of the day.

And I've learned a tonne about finances in the past 18 months since quitting my job.

But I'll be honest, I've been waiting for a viral vid like this for a while, and I want to share some things about why it's exciting.

So over 4 years ago, I went viral for the first time with this video:

But I had no monetisation system behind it. Nothing.

I wasn't even monetised when I posted it, so for the first ~50k views and 4 months, I didn't earn anything.

50,000 lovely, wonderful people watched my video, and I earned zilch from it.

Now, there's nothing wrong with that. Money isn't everything, and ultimately everyone I know in this YouTube game cares about many things beyond the money.

But building a business we can live from is a HUGE reason why lots of us get into YouTube.

And if I had any entrepreneurial chops at the time, here's how things could have unfolded:

  • I'd make a call to action in the video to anyone who wanted help landing a consulting job, then they could book a free call below
  • Have some questions on the booking link to filter out the wrong people
  • VERY conservatively get 50 calls booked (0.015% of viewers).
  • Take 50 calls (yes, this would have been tiring and stressful), and then around 30% would likely decide to go ahead and work with me, at a price point of $2k. So that'd be 15 people.

So instead of making $0, I could have made $30k.

At a minimum!

Of course, this is assuming I had the time and desire to take on 15 clients alongside my job, but that's a convo for another day.

But at the time, it didn't matter because I had no clue what I was doing.

Now today, when I go viral, things look very different.

I have:

  • An offer aligned with what I talk about in the video
  • A way for viewers watching to find that offer
  • A call to action at the end directing to my offer
  • A call to action earlier in the video to my free resources
  • A system to deliver results to clients

(not to mention the channel is monetised, and I'll earn a whopping $90 from those 18k views, let's goo 🚀)

At this point, there's a bit of a Tintin universe to explore.

A Tinverse, if you will (no problem if you won't).

Videos, emails, podcasts, roadmaps, calculators, workshops, community, programme.

99% for free, 1% paid.

And all in the name of helping educational YouTubers change the world, and make a living at the same time.

It's taken time to get to this point.

But what's so incredible about YouTube, is that all it takes is 1 video to change everything.

I've seen this time and again over the past few years.

A YouTuber who's getting 1,000s of views on their channel, but has no way of helping their audience more.

They're rarely making the money they want to be.

And then they make an offer that's aligned, 1 video goes viral and their business explodes overnight.

OR a business owner who has a great product/service already, but no views on YouTube.

Then suddenly the channel blows up and so does their business.

Aman Manazir, who I made a video about recently, said that 2 years ago he was trying to get his software engineering accelerator off the ground, and then a video went viral with 200k+ views, and 300 applications rolled in.

He then went on to make $30k the next month, and over $1m in the next 12 months...

And along the way he's helped literally 100s of people land their dream job. Who might not have otherwise.

It's amazing to see.

But all this stuff takes time.

I've been plugging away for over a year on YouTube with this new type of content.

First on a different channel, and for the last 8 months on my main channel.

So what's been my formula?

  • Consistency
  • Improvement
  • Experimentation

The big 3.

Let's see how things change in the business over the next couple months.

I will of course be documenting the journey here, and share learnings along the way.

My dear YouTube friends, I have some bad news. I moved house last week. Which means we are saying goodbye to this lovely filming background... I actually really liked it. And secretly I quite like the fact that my bed is in the background for some bedroom YouTuber vibes. And one day when I'm being interviewed on the Diary of a CEO I can say "I literally built a $1bn business from my bedroom" and all that good stuff, while I shed a tear about all the sacrifices I made, for them to put in the...

A few years ago, I read an amazing book. It's called The Go-Giver, by John Mann and Bob Burg. It's a very easy to read short story (roughly 100 pages) about a guy called Joe. Joe was a "go-getter", the type of person to go out and make life happen. And ultimately, to get more of what he wanted. As you can probably guess by the name, the book is about how giving more is actually the secret to Joe finding true success. A common theme in the business/self-help book world. It's clichéd, but true....

This morning at 8am, I walked around Highbury Fields in London. A pic from last Winter I often do this before starting a day's work. I grab a coffee and ponder life's big questions, while getting some steps in. As the sun rises on a beautiful day, I think about YouTube, thumbnails, and how no one can be truly happy without 1m subscribers on their YouTube channel. But one question I grappled with this morning was what are my guiding principles? What makes a happy business and life for me?...
